Usual residence’ means the place where a person normally spends the daily period of rest, regardless of temporary absences for purposes of recreation, holidays, visits to friends and relatives, business, medical treatment or religious pilgrimage.

  • Those who have lived in their place of usual residence for a continuous period of at least 12 months before the reference time; or
  • Those who arrived in their place of usual residence during the 12 months before the reference time with the intention of staying there for at least one year.
        According to the legal provisions on keeping the register of births, every birth is entered in the register of births maintained for the area of its occurrence and during processing, the data are grouped by legal place of residence of the mother.       According to the legal provisions on keeping the register books of deaths, each deceased person is entered in the register of deaths maintained for the area of its occurrence.During processing, the data are grouped by permanent place of residence i.e the resalts are processing by principle of permanent place of residence.

Live Birth - is the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception irrespective of the duration of pregnancy, which after such separation, breathes or shows any other evidence of life, such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord or definite movement of voluntary muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or placenta is attached. Death’ means the permanent disappearance of all evidence of life at any time after live birth. Immigrants are people arriving from abroad to establish usual residence in a country for a period that is of at least 12 months, having previously been usually residents having previously been usually resident in another Member State or a third country. Еmigration’ means the action by which a person, having previously been usually resident in the territory of a Member State, ceases to have his or her usual residence in that Member State for a period that is, or is expected to be, of at least 12 monthsNot available.

Data are available at national level of geographical detail.

The reference date for population data is the end of the reference period (midnight of 31December).
The reference period for vital events  data is the calendar year in which the events occurred.  
The reference period for migration flow data is the calendar year in which the migration occurred.

Data accuracy is ensured by working on decreasing sampling and/or non-sampling errors, as well as with additional data comparisons and analysis before dissemination.

Counts of statistical units.

After verification and possible corrections in consultation with the reporting units, i.e. register offices, completed questionnaires are entered in the regional offices in an application with on-line controls. Missing data are provided by imputation of data, according to the established methodological rules and guidelines for control. Data entered in regional departments are then taken by the subject-matter department in the Central Office, where additional control, processing and tabulation of data is done by using established methodological rules and defined control criteria.

Population estimation is matematicaly balanced estimation of total population of Republic of North Macedonia calculated for two critical moments for every calendar year, for 30 June and 31 December.

For estimating the population by sex and age are used folowing data:

  • Number of population from previous year, by sex and year of birth
  • Number of new bourn persons during the year, by sex
  • Number of dead persons during the year, by sex and year of birth
  • Number of net migration during the year by sex and year of birth
The source of data for this statistical survey is administrative, i.e. the data are obtained on the basis of records / registration of births in the register of births by the Register Offices responsible for the Register of Births - Ministry of Justice - Department for Civil Registration.
