Data refer to citizens of the Czech Republic and foreigners with permanent residence in the Czech Republic, third-country nationals with temporary residence in the territory of the Czech Republic on the basis of a long-term visa (over 90 days) or a long-term residence permit, nationals of the EU Member States, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and their family members with notified temporary residence in the territory of the Czech Republic and foreigners with valid asylum status in the Czech Republic and persons granted temporary protection with usual residence in the Czech Republic. The definition in national legislation is given only in guidelines for filling in a report on examination of the deceased person: live birth is the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother, irrespective of the duration of the pregnancy, which, after such separation, breathes or shows any other evidence of life, i.e. beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord or definite movement of voluntary muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached. Irreversible cessation of functioning of the whole brain including the brain trunk, or irreversible cessation of circulation of blood (pursuant to Act No. 285/2002 Sb - Transplantation Act). - Until 2000, data referred only to the population with permanent residence in the Czech Republic (irrespective of citizenship).
- Since 2001, following the 2001 Census of population, houses and dwellings, the data have newly also included foreigners with a visa for a stay over 90 days and foreigners with asylum status.

- Since May 1, 2004, the figures have also included European Union nationals with a temporary stay in the territory of the Czech Republic, and third-country nationals with a long-term residence permit.

- Since 2022, the population has also included persons granted temporary protection in the Czech Republic with usual residence in the Czech Republic who asked for its prolongation.

 

Births:

- From 1988 to 31 March 2012: a live-born child is a child who gives at least one sign of life (respiration, heartbeat, umbilicus pulsation, active movement of muscles) and whose birth weight is 500 g or more, or whose birth weight is below 500 g if it survives 24 hours after delivery.

- Since 1 April 2012: The complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the duration of the pregnancy, which, after such separation, breathes or shows any other evidence of life - i.e. beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord or definite movement of voluntary muscles - whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached (The definition of live birth and stillbirth along with all cases of abortions are provided in the instructions for filling in the Report on examination of the deceased person (in the Decree No 297/2012 Sb, on the Report on Examination of the Deceased Person, as amended), for the purpose of filling in this report.).

Population figures are after a population census, during the whole intercensal period, balanced with data on births, deaths and migration data (surveyed from statistical reports and population register and its supplementary information systems and administrative data sources for migration data). The latest population census was held on March 26, 2021. Statistical reports on births from Registry Offices. Statistical reports on deaths from Registry Offices and the Census Information System (population register and its supplementary information systems). Alien Information System administrated by Directorate of Alien Police and the Central Population Register Record of the Ministry of Interior. Alien Information System administrated by Directorate of Alien Police and the Central Population Register Record of the Ministry of Interior.
18.2. Frequency of data collection

All data are collected on a monthly base.
18.3. Data collection

Demographic data collection follows the Act on the State Statistical Service. For the provision of such information the state institutions, or health service facilities, are obliged to provide to the Czech Statistical Service individual data on personal identification number, place of permanent residence, citizenship, birth characteristics of a newly born child, marital status, cause of death, age of the deceased infant, and place and time of the surveyed occurrence. Data on deaths of nationals are obtained by processing data from population register and its supplementary information systems in the Census information system, which has been established as an information system of the public administration in Act No 89/1995 Sb on State Statistical Service.

The data is checked for logical inconsistencies each month.
18.5. Data compilation

Live births: the sum of (i) live births of mothers with permanent residence (Czech nationals and foreigners) or appropriate kind of temporary residence (foreigners) in the territory of the Czech Republic registered by Registry Offices in the reference year, and (ii) timely registered in the CR live births of Czech nationals with permanent residence in the CR taken place outside the CR.

Deaths: the sum of (i) deceased persons with permanent residence (Czech nationals and foreigners) or the appropriate kind of temporary residence (foreigners) in the territory of the Czech Republic registered by Registry Offices in the reference year and (ii) registered in the CR deaths of Czech nationals with permanent residence in the CR taken place outside the CR.

Immigrants: the sum of registered persons, who have permitted appropriate kind of temporary residence or permanent residence in the territory of the Czech Republic, and who had a previous residence in another country.

Emigrants: the sum of registered persons, who changed residence to another country, and who had a previous appropriate kind of temporary residence or permanent residence in the CR.

Population balance: population as at 31 December = population as at 1 January + births – deaths + immigrants – emigrants.
