3.1. Data description

Statistics on eggs for hatching and farmyard poultry chicks are collected under (market) Regulation (EC) No 617/2008. They are the earliest available information to foresee production of poultry meat and eggs, as the numbers of chicks of various utilities placed in the farms of each Member State, i.e. the number of chicks placed by the hatcheries of this Member State increased by the net import of chicks.

In Hungary, the data are collected based on the requirements of the Regulation (EC) No 617/2008. The data providers are the licensed poultry incubation stations. They are reporting their data monthly, the deadline is the 12th day after the reference month. Electronic data transmission is obligatory for the data providers since 1 January 2013. The number of data providers is declining year by year, in year 2021 their number was 94.

6.2. Institutional Mandate - data sharing

There is an agreement between the National Food Chain Safety Office (NFCSO) and the Hungarian Central Statistical Office. The responsible for the data collection is the Hungarian Central Statistical Office. NFCSO is also collecting data but not in detalied as it is required by the Regulation (EC) 617/2008/. In addition the NFCSO is not collecting monthly data by the smaller hatcheries.

There is no separate national metadata file on hatchery statistics. The main infomation on the data collection is covered by the metadata information Livestock and animal production statistics. Since the number of hatcheries is declining year by year, and their number is less than 100, HCSO has a good cooperation with them for a long time. It means that most of them are sending their data on time in good quality, however some consultations are needed in some cases month by month in order to confirm or correct the data that were sent. The data collection is electronic, all the rules are incorporated into the system. Imputation is not needed, we have enough time until the data transmission to contact those whose data are missing. The data collection is full scope, the received and checked data can be easily aggregated to national level in our Unique Data Processing System.
