3.1. Data description

Statistics on eggs for hatching and farmyard poultry chicks are collected under (market) Regulation (EC) No 617/2008. They are the earliest available information to foresee production of poultry meat and eggs, as the numbers of chicks of various utilities placed in the farms of each Member State, i.e. the number of chicks placed by the hatcheries of this Member State increased by the net import of chicks.


In Greece, data are constructed using administrative sources. Direct communication with hatcheries ensures direct and in-time flow of information.  Regarding the number of imports-exports of ‘Chicks’ the electronic platform TRACES (trade control and expert systems) is used by the appropriate department of the Ministry of Rural Development & Food of Greece.
