3.1. Data description

Statistics on eggs for hatching and farmyard poultry chicks are collected under (market) Regulation (EC) No 617/2008. They are the earliest available information to foresee production of poultry meat and eggs, as the numbers of chicks of various utilities placed in the farms of each Member State, i.e. the number of chicks placed by the hatcheries of this Member State increased by the net import of chicks.

In Belgium, the regional authorities are responsible for the data collection as defined by Regulation (EC) No 617/2008.
In Flanders this is the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. The hatcheries provide the figures to the Department each month by email.

For the Walloon region, there is currently only 1 hatchery active. The Walloon region requests the figures from this hatcery every month and then sends them to the Department, which then compiles the national statistics.

A monthly survey is sent to all hatcheries and the selection and breeding establishments (these are the companies that have an accreditation within the framework of Regulation No 617/2008).
The following definitions are used :
1) eggs hatched= eggs for hatching placed in incubation by a Belgian hatchery. These data come from the Belgian hatcheries themselves.
2) chicks = chicks hatched and placed in Belgium (include 18-day incubated eggs ready for hatching)
3) Export of chicks = the export of day-old chicks as reported by the Belgian hatcheries
4) Import of chicks = the import of day-old chicks as reported by the Belgian hatcheries / breeding farms if relevant
Special attention is paid to avoid double counting as a lot of hatcheries are active in more than one country.
Rearing farms, laying farms, broiler farms or exporters fall outside the scope of our survey because these companies are not covered by Regulation No 617/2008.

The definition of chicks categories in the monthly survey is fully compatible with Regulation No 617/2008

External trade statistics are not used because of the delay of these data
