2.1. Data description

Annual crop statistics provide statistics on the area under main arable crops, vegetables and permanent crops and production and yield levels. The statistics are collected from a wide variety of sources: surveys, administrative sources, experts and other data providers. The data collection covers early estimates (before the harvest) and the final data. Data are collected mostly at national level but for the main arable crops also regional data exist (NUTS 1/2 and agricultural area).

2.2. Classification system

Hierarchical crop classification system.

2.3. Coverage - sector

Growing of non-perennial crops, perennial crops and plant propagation (NACE A01.1-01.3)

2.4. Statistical concepts and definitions

Additional comments

Until 2013 the provisional and final results were based on an annual survey that took place in two phases. The first phase was in August 2013 for the provisional results and the second phase for the final results took place in January 2014.

The humidity for cereals and pulses comes from the harvest survey. The humidity for green maize is an expert estimation.

Which method is used for calculating the yield for main arable crops?
If another method, describe it.

In the survey farmers can choose to fill in the yield or production. For farmers who filled in the production instead of the yield, the yield will be derived from the production.

For further calculations of the productions, the yields and cultivated areas have been used.

If there were delays, what were the reasons?

delays of delivery of IACS data

delays of delivery of IACS data

Every year the Flemish Region organizes a meeting with the auctions to estimate the area and production of vegetables.  Normally the meeting takes place in March but sometimes  it is later. Statistics Belgium has the permission to use these results.

Two times in a year (November Y and  Y+1) the Flemish Region organizes a meeting with the auctions to estimate the area and production of fruit and strawberries.

First, the Belgian territory is divided into cells which are defined as the intersection of provinces (NUTS2) and agricultural regions.

Then, 1400 holdings are selected. The number of holdings in each cell is proportional to the square root of the (agricultural area utilized – grassland) of each cell. For each cell we establish a classification of the holdings taking into account the total area of eligible crops and the total number of eligible crops in the cell. Subsequently, we select the first holdings of the list to the amount of each cell. The remaining holdings are used to increase the representativeness for the crops with a little area and to account for the annual increase in non-response.

With which other data sources the crop statistics data have been compared?  None
If others, which?
If no comparisons have been made, why not?

All those different sources have been used to calculate the results for each item. E.g. the administrative data and the horticultural survey were used in the IFS and the annual crop statistics. The results of the IFS and annual crop statistics are used for the national accounts. So, there is no overlap between the different statistics.
