3.3. Data collection
Definitions
Are the national definitions of cultivation/production area and crops the same as in Reg. 543/2009? No
If not, please explain the differences Definition of arable land is not completely in line with the EU. There is no notion of 5 years period to be plugged at minimum.

Strawberries area counted under orchards.

No data on common land are available (but will be in the census).

Potatoes are counted under vegetables.

There are other differences with EU methodology as well. Some of them, such as classification of vineyards are closely related with agriculture policy and cannot be implemented independently from the changes of the agriculture policy in the country.

In the frame of the  AC in line of the EU requirements many of the issues were discussed and implemented in the questionnaire for AC.

Population

Kosovo Agency of Statistics conducts Agriculture Household Survey (AHS) (annual) each year, whereas the survey on Agriculture Enterprises and Cooperatives (social sector) was conducted in 2003 and 2004.This survey is done until 2013 (except 2010 and 2011which was not done due to limited budget).

The purpose of this survey is to provide the statistical data for the agriculture sector in Kosovo (for survey reference period).

Agriculture Household Survey covers different field in agriculture: agriculture population and its structure, land area, land use, irrigation, forestry, crop area, yields  and  agriculture production, area and production of second crops (after the first harvest), autumn sowing area, livestock and livestock production, agriculture machinery, use of fertilizers, labour force in agriculture, farm expenditure and farm income. AHS is done only in rural areas and presents agriculture in rural area. AHS it is a sample survey, size of sample was different in different years.

Crop statistics are produced through AHS. Crop part in the AHS survey presents data on areas under cultivation by crop (in hectares); production / yields in kg. Crops which are covered in AHS are: cereals (wheat, rye, barley, barley for bier, oats, maize) potatoes, vegetables ( tomato, aubergine, peppers, pumpkin, courgete, mushrooms, cucumbers, watermelon, melon, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, red beet, parsley, leeks, onion, radish, garlic, beans, peas, carrots), forage plants (grass, mixed grass, lucerne, trefoil, vetch), industrial crops (tobacco, sunflower, sugar beet, oil beet, soy, and medical crops), Fruits(apple, pear, quince, medlar, plum, apricot, peach, cherry, sour cherry, walnut, hazelnut, chestnut, strawberry, blackberry), grapes (wine grape, table grape).

AHS is done in November every year except for 2001 and 2002 when AHS was done twice a year. Questionnaire for AHS has remained since 2004 with minor changes introduced time after time.

Data are presented (published) at Kosovo and regional level and in some cases at municipality level. Data at regional level are more robust than at municipality level, as for some municipalities the number of households interviewed in each stratum is small.

Census of agriculture was carried out in November 2014. Census will provide sampling frame for all future surveys in agriculture and will enable revision crop statistics surveys. We are planning to do new survey for crop in November 2015 with new methodology and new questionnaire for crop statistics. In 2017 it is planned to do two survey for crops in June and in November.
