Expenditure on the family/children function encompasses social benefits to assist and protect the family, particularly children. Expenditure is disaggregated by means testing and by detailed social benefit type, distinguishing periodic and lump sum cash benefits and benefits in kind, including parental leave, birth grants, day care and accommodation. The population encompasses all social protection schemes including central, state or local government and other non‑government controlled schemes, with basic and supplementary components. Expenditure is available in different units of measure, using harmonized definitions to ensure cross‑country comparability.
