Social exclusion and crime can heavily impact the potential of young people, who are often vulnerable and unsure about their future. Paths of Inclusion Territorial Innovation and Empowerment in Rione Sanità of Naples (PITER) aims to protect young people by providing individual plans to keep them on the right path.
The project, which is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF), works by establishing a relationship between local teachers and young people at risk of, or currently experiencing, social exclusion. They guide them away from involvement in crime by offering alternatives – such as educational courses. This gives young people an opportunity to refresh and strengthen their basic skills – and benefit from one-to-one tutoring.
‘In the theatre laboratory that I attend we are studying Totò's poem La livella,’ says Emilia Greco, a young participant. ‘I have fun, I learn a lot of things and I am with other people like me. The educators of the PITER project are very kind: they help us with our homework and make us have fun. I really enjoy coming here.’
Participants like Emilia can also take part in group activities, such as sports tournaments and music workshops, to strengthen their social skills. Institutions, schools, and families work together to organize events and activities, allowing around 297 young people to follow individual plans and participate in a range of courses and confidence-building exercises.
