A project to secure land rights and enable sustainable community management of the land has increased rangeland vegetation, supporting the livelihood and income opportunities of herders and restoring ecosystem services in a fragile dryland region.
The four-year-project, funded by the European Union, aimed at poverty reduction, sustainable management and restoration of ecosystems in drylands and rangelands. It was implemented in four countries: Botswana (Kgalagadi District), Jordan (Zarqa River Basin), Mali (Mopti Region), and Sudan (Kassala and Gedaref States).

Brochure 'The EU Biodiversity for Life (B4Life) Flagship Initiative': B4Life is a flagship initiative of the European Commission Development and Cooperation - EuropeAid, for the period 2014-2020. It responds to global threats to biodiversity and addresses the need to enable sustainable development as part of efforts to conserve ecosystems.
ABOUT THIS SECTOR Biodiversity is the variety of all living organisms, their habitats and their interactions. Biodiversity and resilient ecosystems support livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, enable access to water and to health, are closely linked to governance and security, and contribute significantly to climate change mitigation and adaptation. For these reasons maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services is crucial to ensuring sustainable livelihoods and the world-wide reduction of poverty.
