Child friendly and gender sensitive ecological and sustainable school sanitation systems in urban and peri-urban areas in Lesotho

The Overall Objective of the Action targets the specific objective of the Call for Proposals ‘to increase sanitation coverage through basic sanitation infrastructure and hygiene promotion projects, focusing on the most vulnerable and needy in poor peri-urban and urban areas, promoting behaviour change by participatory methods, and leading to improvements in health, human dignity, environment sustainability, education and socio-economic development' and reads as follows: "To increase safe access to sustainably improved ecological sanitation systems in schools in peri-urban and urban areas of Lesotho."

Results:

  • Ecological sanitation systems constructed in up to 26 schools
  • Child friendly and gender sensitive promotion of key hygiene behaviours with special reference to Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) and maintenance of facilities incl. hand washing devices implemented at 40 schools and replicated in related communities.
  • Capacities and skills of local actors to install, operate and maintain culturally and ecologically sound sanitation systems are strengthened
  • Community Water and Sanitation Committees execute responsible ownership.

Facts and figures: 6000 girls and 6000 boys in up to 26 schools have been reached (this figures are subject to change after having the final report which is due to be submitted early 2019, also note that initially up to 40 schools had been targeted but only 26 have been reached as it was found that some schools have more pupils than it was foreseen hence more units were needed.
