InfoPoint Lunchtime conference: How to extend social protection to informal workers?

InfoPoint Lunchtime conference: How to extend social protection to informal workers?

Many of the workers in the formal economy can count on regular income, health insurance, unemployment benefits if they lose their jobs and a pension when they retire. Such rights are a distant dream for workers in the informal economy, most of them making up the workforce in many countries. For them, an illness, an accident, unemployment or retirement can push their families deep into poverty.

The team of the EU-funded project Research Network and Support Facility will present the book “Extending Coverage: Social Protection and the Informal Economy” to highlight the importance of finding strategies and mechanisms to extend social protections schemes to informal workers. The ILO will illustrate its experience and strategies on how to tackle this complex issue.
