Fighting IUU fishing

Fighting IUU fishing

EU action against Illegal Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing remains one of the greatest threats to sustainable fisheries, the livelihoods of those who depend upon them and marine ecosystems. It takes advantage of corrupt administrations and exploits weak management regimes, in particular those of developing countries lacking the capacity and resources for effective monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS). In those countries, IUU fishing threatens livelihoods, exacerbates poverty, and augments food insecurity. SDG 14 calls for combatting IUU fishing.
