EU and Colombia, key partners for peace - Special event

On may 31st of 2018, the European Union hosted a special event on the Colombian peace process, bringing together the President of Colombia and Nobel Prize Winner, Juan Manuel Santos, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, the former President of Spain, Felipe González, and other high-ranking political figures and representatives of the peace process in Colombia. The event looked at the implementation of the peace process and how the EU can continue to help. It also focused on identifying lessons learned from the Colombian peace process which may be relevant for the resolution of conflicts elsewhere in the world.

The event was divided in three sessions: The introduction was done by President Santos and HR Mogherini, moderated by the renowned journalist, John Carlin. Then, the master of ceremonies introduced the first panel on LESSONS LEARNED from the peace process. Felipe Gonzalez moderated the discussion with participants such as Dag Nylander, Former Special Representative for Norway to Colombia, Benkos Biojo, Member of Fuerza Alternativa Revolucionaria del Común party (FARC), Jeffrey Feltman, Former Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs at the UN and H.E. Sergio Jaramillo, Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to the European Union and Former High Commissioner for Peace.

The second panel was a discussion on PEACE, DEVELOPMENT AND TRADE, moderated by John Carlin. Participants included Jolita Butkeviciene, Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the European Commission, Eamon Gilmore, EU Special Envoy for the Peace Process in Colombia, Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland, Padre Francisco de Roux, President of Colombia's Truth Commission, Republic of Colombia, Luis de Grandes Pascual, Chair, Delegation for Relations with the Countries of the Andean Community, European Parliament, Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, (ECLAC), Helena König, Deputy Director General, DG Trade, European Commission, Arnaldo Abruzzini, CEO of the Association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Belgium and Hilde Hardeman, Director – Head of Service, Service for Foreign Policy Instruments, European Commission.
