Ensuring respect for human rights in regional military operations

Ensuring respect for human rights in regional military operations

Crisis, security and humanitarian contexts tend to exacerbate or trigger human rights concerns. Ensuring protection and respect for human rights and international humanitarian law (IHL), particularly by security and defence forces during their operations, is key. The EU is deeply committed to ensuring respect for human rights and accountability, and as such is the main donor to support the establishment of the compliance framework on human rights of the G5 Sahel Joint Force implemented by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The Compliance Framework is an innovative package of concrete, systematic and mutually reinforcing measures and mechanisms to prevent and address International Human Rights Law and international refugee law violations that could be committed by the G5 Sahel Joint Force and seeks to reduce the risk of harm to civilians in the conduct of military operations.
