Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, met with Secretary of State, Cardinal Parolin and Cardinal Peter K. Turkson, First prefect of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development. They discussed ways to cooperate over the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals, emphasising the importance of human development. The visit follows the recent first Development Dialogue between the European Commission’s Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development and the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development of the Holy See, where a number of areas and countries to deepen cooperation were identified.
Commissioner Mimica said: “I am looking forward to further deepening the mutual understanding of our respective development policies, but above all operationalising our cooperation in selected countries, as well as on key societal and global challenges, such as migration or rise in inequalities.”
This visit will be followed by collaboration between experts and exchanges of information, as well as participation in a number of initiatives and events organised by both sides.
The EU has experience in working with Faith Based Organisations and a number of Civil Society Organisations affiliated to the Holy See receive EU funding. European Commission Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development has a Strategic Partnership (so-called ‘Framework Partnership Agreement’ (FPA)) with "Coopération Internationale pour le Développement et la Solidarité" (CIDSE), the international platform of Catholic social justice organisations working in development. This sets common objectives related to strengthening civil society capacities and participation in European and international policy making processes and promoting global partnerships for sustainable development. Work is ongoing on how to develop a more informed and more effective cooperation with Faith Based Organisations from all religious affiliations.
