Today, the Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, has issued a video message to coincide with the release of a series of recommendations from the Task Force for Rural Africa.
The Commission set up the Task Force in May last year to offer expertise, advice and recommendations on strengthening the Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs in food and farming.
The Task Force’s recommendations call for several initiatives to help transform Africa’s agri-food sector and rural economy. These are built around four strategic areas:
- an approach to income and job creation that looks beyond the agricultural sector and takes account of local economic, social and environmental realities, supported by local knowledge and people;
- sustainable land and natural resources management, coupled with climate action to make African agriculture more resilient to the impacts of climate change;
- sustainable transformation of agriculture in Africa that takes economic, environmental and social aspects into account; and
- development of Africa’s food industry and food markets.
To support these efforts, the Africa-Europe Alliance will play a central role on various levels.
In his message, the Commissioner emphasises the importance of the recommendations and highlights the need to deliver a positive rural transformation, together with an inclusive and sustainable agriculture and agri-food sector. In his words, this is "another example of Africa-EU cooperation in action".
