Democracy and human rights

For World Day against Child Labour on 12 June, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) jointly organised a conference followed by an interactive workshop: United to end child labour in agriculture.
Humanitarian crises are becoming more frequent, severe, complex and protracted. Displacement is occurring on an unprecedented scale. As a result, humanitarian response capacity is stretched while the funding gap is widening. There is increasing recognition that alternative approaches are needed to meet the growing needs of the people heavily hit by crisis and shocks.
Commissioner Neven Mimica speaks of child labour on the occasion of World day against child labour.
The objective pursued by the programme is to improve access to justice for women, the poor and people living in vulnerable situations.

Context: Promotion of rule of law and State accountability Objectives: The project aimed to foster greater accountability of public institutions and leaders to citizens in line with the Constitution of Lesotho. Results:
Objectives: The project raised awareness, mobilized support and lobbied the Government of Lesotho to establish the Human Rights Commission which would be an independent, autonomous and Paris Principles compliant body. Results: Establishment of a fully functional Human Rights Commission in Lesotho Reporting of Human Rights Violations to an independent body.
In Lesotho the structures for governance of public institutions exist but they do not have the capacity and environment to exercise their functions fully. Citizens, especially in rural areas, find it difficult to know what their rights are and where to voice their needs. The population is neither sufficiently informed nor strategically organised to exercise its civic rights. The constitution entrenches the right of citizens to participate in public affairs but is basically only applied at times of elections.
The objectives pursued by the programme are to contribute to the consolidation of democracy ensuring an inclusive, rights based society and an efficient and transparent administration.
