Niue

An isolated coral atoll in the South Pacific, Niue is the least populated of all ACP countries.  Its isolation, limited natural resources, shortage of skilled labour – in part caused by migration – and the effects of climate change, all hinder development.

Tourism – particularly eco-tourism – is one of its best prospects for long-term economic development.  Thanks to its welfare system, there is no extreme poverty in Niue. Already having reached most of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the country has a relatively high level of education and good sanitation and public health services. An increased supply of energy from renewable resources is the main target of EU funding.

Cooperation 2008-13

The Country Strategy Paper for Niue (2008-2013) and a multi-annual indicative programme identify renewable energy and energy efficiency as priorities for the €3.3 funding allocation under the 10th European Development Fund (2008-13).

EU assistance is increasing power generation from renewable resources which both cuts back the cost of importing diesel and improves energy efficiency.
