Covering an area of 4,148 km2, the Trnava Region is the second-smallest region of Slovakia (accounting for 8.5% of the total area). It lies in western Slovakia, where it shares a common border with the Czech Republic and Austria in the north and with Hungary in the south. It shares a border with the Bratislava, Nitra and Trenčín Regions.
In terms of territorial administration, it is divided into 7 districts: Dunajská Streda, Galanta, Hlohovec, Piešťany, Senica, Skalica, and Trnava. The largest of these is Dunajská Streda, covering 25.9% of the region’s area, and the smallest is Hlohovec, covering 6.4%.
Geographically, the largest area is occupied by the Danubian Lowland in the south and the Záhorie Lowland in the north. They are separated by the Malé Karpaty [Little Carpathians], a thrust mountain belt in which Záruby is the highest peak (with an elevation of 768 m).
The region is situated almost in the geographical centre of Europe and has a common border with three states – the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary. This creates conditions conducive to the development of cross-border cooperation. The River Morava marks the border with the Czech Republic and Austria, while the Danube forms the border with Hungary in the south.
With 563,591 inhabitants as of 31/12/2019, the Trnava Region is the least populated of all the regions, accounting for 10.4% of the country’s total population. The region consists of 251 municipalities, making six municipalities per 100 km2. There is a significant population concentration in 17 municipalities that have the status of a town. 47.41% of inhabitants live in towns.
It is the second most densely populated region, with 136 inhabitants per km2. The population density varies between districts within the region. The highest average number of inhabitants per km2 (179) is in the Trnava district. The lowest population density is in the Senica district, with an average of 88 inhabitants per km2.
According to statistical data from the Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, the number of job seekers in the Trnava Region as at the end of April 2021 was 15,596, which represents a registered unemployment rate of 2.33%.
The Trnava Region is one of the most productive agricultural regions of Slovakia (after the Nitra Region). Agricultural land accounts for 69.4% of the region’s total area. Its arable land index (89.7%) is the highest of all the Slovak regions. The production capacity of agricultural land in this region is very good. This is also reflected in breakdown of land by crops, which are primarily cereals, oilseeds, sugar beet and perennial fodder crops. The highest yields per hectare of any of the country’s regions are achieved here. Plant production is complemented by livestock production particularly cattle and pig rearing.
Almost all industrial activities are represented in this region. The territorial distribution of industry is uneven, as the northern and central parts are industrial, while the southern part is agri-industrial in nature. Food production (milk and dairy products, meat and meat products, sugar, confectionery and sparkling wines) has developed on the strength of the primary agricultural production. Much of the region’s production consists of the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical goods, and motor vehicles. Other major industries include the production of metal structures, the production of machinery and equipment not classified elsewhere, the production of chemicals and chemical products, the production and processing of metals, and the production of basic pharmaceutical products.
The Trnava Region, and particularly the regional capital, Trnava, is a significant national and international transport hub. It includes road, railway and river transport. Important routes pass through the region, making their way from Bratislava through Trnava to Žilina and from Hodonín through Trnava to Nitra. Railway transport encompasses major routes, such as Bratislava – Žilina and the Trnava – Galanta and Trnava – Kúty electrified single-track lines, extending the southern railway track towards the Czech Republic. The Bratislava – Galanta – Štúrovo line is also important. The construction of the Gabčíkovo dam has substantially improved shipping conditions on the Slovak part of the Danube.

The Žilina Region is located in the north-west of Slovakia. Covering 6,809 km2, it occupies 13.9% of the country’s total area and is the third largest region. To the north-west it shares a state border with the Czech Republic, and to the north with Poland. The region borders three other Slovak regions – Trenčín, Banská Bystrica and Prešov. The Žilina Region is made up of five natural historical regions: Horné Považie, Kysuce, Liptov, Orava and Turiec.
The organisation of the Žilina Region’s local administration, as defined by Act of the National Council of the Slovak Republic No 221/1996, is broken down into 11 districts: Bytča, Čadca, Dolný Kubín, Kysucké Nové Mesto, Liptovský Mikuláš, Martin, Námestovo, Ružomberok, Turčianske Teplice, Tvrdošín and Žilina. The region has a long-standing tradition in machine manufacturing (railway equipment, bearings, construction machinery and tools). The automotive industry has built on this traditional base. The region’s economic growth is spearheaded by the Korean car manufacturer KIA Motors, which also accounts for the largest foreign investment in the region. As forests cover more than 50% of the region’s area, forestry plays a major role. With its abundant wood sources, the region has historically been home to industries such as woodworking and paper and pulp production. There are many mineral water springs in the region, a number of which have healing properties and drive the development of spa services, wellness services and the production of soft drinks.

Trends in employment |
The most important economic sectors include trade, manufacturing (in particular the food industry, based on agricultural production), clothing, textiles, woodworking, engineering, but also the electrical, chemicals and pharmaceutical industries. Approximately 34% of the economically active population is employed in industry. Due to the region's vast potential for tourism development, there are also significant labour shortages in accommodation and catering services. Employers are advertising vacancies for dressmakers, welders, CNC operators and metal workers (horizontal milling machine operators, milling machine operators, turners, metal forming operators), and assembly workers. There are not enough doctors, nurses, pharmacists, drivers (goods vehicles and lorries), and there is also a skills gap in the service sector, in particular among waiting staff, cooks, bartenders and chambermaids.
The 2019 Slovak Labour Market Forecast predicts that there will be an overall additional demand for labour in the Prešov Region up until 2024. Most of the job opportunities will be suitable for those who have completed their secondary education or hold a university degree. The labour shortage will be felt most in engineering, numerous trade and financial occupations, transport, logistics and postal services. A great many workers will also be needed in construction and education. Skilled workers and craftsmen, specialists, and plant and machinery operators and assemblers will account for half of the Prešov Region’s total additional labour needs by 2024. Other in-demand workers will be technicians and professionals, unskilled labourers, managers, administration workers and skilled agricultural, forestry and fishery workers.
The highest registered unemployment rate in the Prešov Region is among jobseekers with incomplete education or who only have basic education and can be placed in ancillary and unskilled jobs in construction, industry, healthcare, agriculture, forestry, trade and services. Jobseekers working in skilled seasonal jobs in the areas of tourism, services, agriculture, forestry and construction also make up a significant proportion of the unemployed.
A significant surplus of school-leavers and graduates in tourism, the business economy and trade management is projected for 2024.
It is forecast that these labour market trends of labour surpluses and shortages up until 2024 will also be influenced by the current circumstances, with COVID-19 impacting the overall economic situation. This may be reflected in labour market developments in the immediate future.
The Košice Region is located in the south-east of Slovakia. It borders Hungary in the south, Ukraine in the east, the Prešov Region in the north and the Banská Bystrica Region in the west. The largest city is Košice (population 238,593), which is the second largest city of Slovakia. Other larger towns are Michalovce, Spišská Nová Ves, Trebišov, and Rožnava. The region is divided territorially into 11 districts. There are 440 self-governing municipalities, of which 17 have town status. The portion of women in the population is higher than the portion of men: 51.2% to 48.8%, respectively.
The main economic branches in the region are industry (metallurgy, engineering, food, electrical engineering, mining, construction materials, fuels and energy), construction and agriculture. Food manufacturing, which involves processing agricultural products, is also important. Agricultural land occupies 333,000 hectares, which is almost half the area of the region. Agricultural production is mainly concentrated in the district of Košice – okolie [Košice – Surroundings], Trebišov, Michalovce and Sobrance.
The local population work mainly in the following sectors: industrial production, trade, education, public administration, transport and telecommunications, IT, health, transport and storage, construction, and information and communication activities.

In general, employers want their future employees to have the appropriate education, experience, professional skills, language proficiency, computer literacy and, if required, proof of the professional competence necessary for the job (e.g. a welding certificate or professional food preparation certificate).
