Healthcare focus at Finnish recruitment event
Jobseekers, students and those interested in the health care profession were invited to a special recruitment drive in southern Finland.
Organised by local Public Employment Services (PES) and EURES, around 300 jobseekers and over 20 employers attended the event in Lahti, Finland, around 100 kilometers north of Helsinki. With healthcare the main focus, human resources personnel from the region’s main hospital as well as from smaller regional healthcare departments and municipalities were present at this recruitment event.
EURES Advisers gave a presentation to the different companies represented informing them of the services EURES provides to employers. For example, there was an emphasis on recruiting nurses from Spain to fill employment gaps, and the help that EURES could provide should the employer want to go forward with this drive.
Those who visited the fair were from Finland and further afield; there were many international students from the University of Applied Sciences from across Europe, wishing to find out more about living and working in other European countries.
Furthermore, there were representatives from the Lahti University of Applied Sciences (LUAS) and Salpaus Further Education – a college network providing vocational education and training, staff development services and general upper-secondary education in the Lahti region – who were on hand to talk to jobseekers about vocational possibilities in the healthcare professions.
Since the establishment of the PES recruitment centre in Pesti in 2005, multiple recruitment events like this one have been organised. “During recent years we’ve developed it further, as in the earlier years we had more general summer recruitment events, such as the European Job Days, where many different occupational sectors were presented. However, as there’s a greater demand for workers in the healthcare sector nowadays, we feel that we want to offer the employers and jobseekers a forum where it’s easy to meet and discuss possibilities,” says Finnish EURES Adviser, Aija Sievänen.
In total, there were over 50 vacancies for nurses and six for doctors on offer to the right candidates. At least four vacancies were filled at the event itself, with several more jobseekers being invited to attend interviews shortly afterwards.
