When leading global oil services company, Aker Solutions, was approached by EURES Norway in early 2011 with an offer to help in recruiting engineers, little did the company realise just how fruitful the cooperation would be.
Employing some 18 500 people in 30 countries, Aker Solutions is always on the look out for new talent to join their growing ranks of professionals. In 2011 alone, the company recruited 2 800 people globally. But identifying the right candidates is not always easy.
“Given the amount of work the oil and gas industry is generating, we needed many qualified engineers. We couldn’t fulfill this need in Norway alone so we knew we also had to start looking abroad. So when the local EURES Advisers suggested that we attend a European Job Day in Portugal in October 2011, we said ‘yes’ immediately,” says Ann Magritt Andersen, Senior Advisor in Human Resources at Aker Solutions in Norway.
A team of representatives from Aker Solutions headed to the two-day event in the Portuguese city of Aveiro with the goal of recruiting four experienced engineers.
“During the two days we received many CVs, conducted about 16 speed interviews and a further five in-depth ones. On the basis of this, we hired five engineers. So you could say this first event with EURES was a success,” enthuses Ann Magritt.
“And Portugal wasn’t even on the agenda before EURES suggested it to us and triggered our curiosity,” she adds.
In 2012, Aker Solutions is looking to recruit a further 3 000 people to various positions throughout the organisation. So will they be counting on EURES for help?
“We’ll definitely use EURES and remain in close cooperation with our local EURES Advisers about forthcoming events in 2012. It’s been very fruitful for us to work with EURES and as long as we need engineers, we’ll continue working together to fill those vacancies,” she concludes.
