Young Swedes find jobs as entertainers thanks to EURES

Over 300 young, Swedish jobseekers were recruited as entertainers for busy tourist resorts in Spain, Italy and Cyprus in 2011, thanks to help from EURES Sweden.

For the past eight years, EURES Sweden has been helping to recruit Swedish jobseekers to positions such as children’s entertainers, fitness instructors and evening show hosts for various resorts in these three EU Member States.

“We want to spread the word as much as possible as there are so many opportunities for young Swedes but they don’t always know what is out there,” states Mia Myrgren, EURES Adviser involved in the recruitment.

Prior experience is often not necessary but applicants should be hard working, have bags of initiative and the ability to speak a number of languages. Positions have proved popular with young Swedes aged 18 to 25 entering the job market for the first time. “It’s not easy to find that first job in Sweden at the moment. So this is the perfect opportunity.”

“Successful candidates usually sign a six or seven-month contract. A number of the resorts provide a week of training and a return plane ticket is included, provided the candidate stays for the duration of the contract. Although the salary ranges from EUR 600 to1 000 per month, free accommodation and three meals per day are also provided, which can be an important factor for some young people leaving home for the first time,” explains Mia.

Every year EURES Advisers from Sweden travel to the resorts to meet the employers, check out the working conditions, and chat with the employees they helped recruit. “We’ve had a lot of positive feedback, especially from employees. They work hard but they also have a lot of fun,” adds Mia.

Recruitment is already well under way for the 2012 summer season and Mia is hopeful that there will be even more vacancies to fill this time around.
