"Without EURES, I wouldn't be here!"
Globetrotting Wouter van Druten from the Netherlands was looking to broaden his horizons when he came across an advert that would take his career in a new and unexpected direction: Bulgaria.
“When I saw that EURES was advertising a job in Bulgaria I decided to contact the person responsible for recruitment to arrange a telephone interview. A few weeks later we met in person in Amsterdam and I got the job,” says Wouter, who loves to travel.
“I had the choice of moving either to Sofia or Veliko Tarnovo in the north-east of the country. I went to the local library to look up information about Sofia but I chose the latter as it’s a truly beautiful place. Four weeks later, I was already in Bulgaria. After a week of training in Sofia, I started work where I am now,” he explains.
“Without EURES, I wouldn’t be here!” he adds enthusiastically.
Wouter works in a call centre for the company Euroccor. His colleagues are mainly Dutch, Belgian and Bulgarian, so English is the common language. “Although the company arranges classes in Bulgarian, which I started, it’s a very difficult language to learn and took up a lot of time and extra work,” he says.
Asked whether he is happy with his decision to move he states: “The opportunity came into my path and I took it. I’m very happy here. I have a good life and can live well on the money I make.”
“My advice for anyone looking to move abroad is to do some research before you leave, on the country, legislation, prices, language,” he concludes.
