Cyprus job day: a new spin on a traditional theme
October signalled the start of a series of job days sweeping through European cities. EURES Cyprus opened two such events this year. But there was a new spin on traditional proceedings.
A total of 200 people, many of whom had just graduated, turned out in the autumn sun to attend two separate events – one in Nicosia on 24 October and the other in Limassol on 26 October. Unlike previous years, the events this year brought together two EU initiatives – a European Job Day and a Youth@Work and entrepreneurship event.
Both events included a first session in which a demonstration was given on how EURES works, together with a whole host of information about EU initiatives promoting mobility. In the afternoon focus shifted to Youth@Work (a campaign to promote contact between young people and small businesses) and entrepreneurship.
This session provided as much practical advice as possible on how to get started in business; how to write a business plan; and how young people could fund their ideas through microfinance schemes. There was also information about the Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs programme, for those who wanted to benefit from a placement with an established entrepreneur in another country in Europe. The highlight, however, was a number of motivational speeches given by industry gurus.
“The series of motivational speeches from established business people talking from their own experience proved to be a great success,” enthuses Antonis Kafouros EURES Manager in Cyprus. “It was the first time that we had experimented with something like this.”
“These two events were very successful. There was a lot of interest in the entrepreneurship advice so we’ll continue with this idea. We had so many positive comments both from participants but also from the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance. We’ll definitely do it again,” concludes an upbeat Antonis.
