“Moving to Ireland was one of the best things that ever happened to me”
When Christos Mouzeviris from Greece started to get wanderlust and dream of broadening his horizons he turned to EURES to help him find a job in another European country. Within a month he was in Ireland in what was to become a life-changing experience.
Christos grew up in Thessaloniki, Greece, studied tourism and started working in the hotel industry on graduation. His work brought him into contact with other nationalities, which sparked his interest in learning more about other countries. He soon started to get restless and dreamt of exploring further afield, experiencing new cultures and meeting new people. That’s when he found out about EURES.
“A friend of mine heard about EURES and recommended that I get in touch with the local EURES Adviser, which I did,” says Christos. “I checked out the EURES website and was inspired by reading the stories from other people who had made the move to another EU country. I made up my mind that that’s what I wanted to do.”
Christos wasted no time in contacting his local EURES Adviser for advice. “I made an appointment during which I explained my language skills, qualifications and the kind of job I was looking for. Two days later I sent a CV in English, which the EURES Adviser faxed immediately to the Irish Hotel Federation. A week later I received a call from a hotel in County Wicklow, Ireland requesting an interview. Within a month I had a job.”
“It all happened very fast. I packed my bags and was off and that was it. I’ve never looked back. That was in 2004 and I’m still there now. What started as a six month adventure has led to something more permanent,” he explains.
“EURES certainly made it easier for me to find this first job. I wouldn’t have known where to start, but the Adviser already had all the contacts and could put me in touch with people. It speeded up the whole process.”
Seven years on and Christos is quite settled on the Emerald Isle. He owns his own home, has a permanent job in the public sector and is studying to become a journalist.
In 2011, Christos won the “tellusyourstory” competition organised by the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Polish Presidency of the Council within the framework of The Single Market Forum. For more information see:
