Dutch employer tops up summer workforce via EURES

Chef and entrepreneur Cees Snijders had begun to question how he could hire enough seasonal staff for the busy summer months at his pizza restaurant and hotel in Zeeland, Holland. After a recommendation from his local employment agency, EURES provided the answer.            
“In the summer I employ a total of at least 25 people, most of whom are on-call. In the past, I was always able to find seasonal employees through my own network, but that became increasingly difficult. In the catering industry, there seems to be more work than people to do it,” explains Cees.
To address this issue, Cees contacted his local employment agency, UWV WERKbedrijf in Zierikzee, who suggested that he try the EURES network. This proved to be a speedy and effective solution to his problem. “Within 30 minutes of advertising the vacancy on EURES, I had 20 CVs in my mailbox including photographs, personal information and work experience. In the end I selected two Slovenian girls as waitresses. Through them, I came into contact with two Czech guys for the kitchen. Arrangements with the tax office went smoothly too. I soon had Dutch national insurance numbers for them.”
As for this year, Cees has already largely resolved his staffing issues through the contacts he made through EURES last summer. I am still in touch with EURES, even if it is only to share my experiences with other employers who are often a little hesitant about working with foreigners. All I can say is that I am very pleased with how things went. They work hard, are very motivated and speak good English. I would recommend it to anyone.”
