European Job Fair for the Youth in Hungary
Hungary played host to a European Job Fair with a difference this April. The event expressly targeted young people and included the first outing of the EU’s Youth@Work campaign.
Youth unemployment continues to run at high levels in Europe, with five million young people under the age of 25 out of work. In light of this problem, EURES Hungary organised the ‘European Job Fair for the Youth’ with the specific aim of matching young jobseekers to employers and encouraging young people to explore different routes into employment.
According to István Sértő-Radics, EURES Adviser responsible for organising the Budapest Job Fair, the event proved a success. "The employers were very satisfied and many expressed their gratitude for offering this free opportunity to make themselves known to the European job market – they didn’t realise that EURES could offer them this much.”
István added: “More than 6 000 visitors were attracted to the event which is a record in the history of Hungarian job fairs. Twenty-two employers participated from 10 countries, along with EURES advisers from 17 countries and numerous European partner organisations".
Youth@Work, launched by Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion László Andor in Budapest, aims to stimulate youth entrepreneurship and match young jobseekers with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The Job Fair brought together SMEs and young jobseekers from across Europe. The jobseekers who took part benefited from panel discussions and workshops, covering topics such as ‘How to prepare a business plan’ and ‘What can the EU do to help young entrepreneurs?’, as well as taking part in networking sessions.
The European Commission, in coordination with EURES, plans to hold further Youth@Work events through out the coming year at European Job Days and related events across Europe. Once the dates for the coming Youth@Work events are finalised they will be presented here.
