EURES helps Dutchman find job in Northern Ireland
Thanks to EURES, Dutchman Danny Kooijman, 23, found a job with the Northern Irish firm, gem. Based in Belfast, gemprovides its clients, including household names such as Microsoft and Cisco Systems, with customer contacts by e-mail and telephone in 29 languages.
In order for gem’s employees to speak to customers in their own language, the company is always on the lookout for native speakers of various languages.
“We spend a great deal of energy on recruitment because we want to select quality staff. Candidates must speak fluent English, be computer literate and service-orientated,” explains Helen Todd, HR Business Partner at gem.
The firm works with EURES to find Dutch applicants, for example, to better serve its Dutch clients. “Our EURES Adviser in Belfast has introduced us to people who know their way around the Dutch labour market. That saves us a lot of time,” adds Helen.
Following an information session at the Dutch Public Employment Service (UWV WERKbedrijf) in which vacancies at gem were explained, Danny Kooijman decided to leave for Northern Ireland. His travel expenses and accommodation for the first few days were covered by gem. After a short period of training, Danny started to work as an agent in the call centre, tasked with providing telephone assistance to customers of a US Internet provider.
Now advanced to be a Business Improvement Representative, Danny is keen to continue working for gem. He is hoping to attend customer service training and appreciates how the company encourages its staff. He gets on well with his colleagues and he adds, “I love the landscape here. So plenty of reasons to stay.”
