To efficiently locate and hire these employees, gem relies heavily on EURES. “We first heard about EURES a few years ago,” said Helen Todd, a Human Resources partner at gem. “Our relationship was kick-started when Lisa Lindsey, a EURES Adviser based in Belfast, contacted us. Since then, we have been in touch with numerous EURES Advisers across Europe, finding the best possible recruits”.
gem and EURES interact in a multitude of different ways throughout the recruitment process: gem uses EURES as its first point of contact for all of its employment requirements. “When we begin the recruitment process, our first step is to send EURES a list of all our vacancies. EURES then shortlists potential applications for us”, continued Ms Todd.
Last year alone, gem hired nine people through EURES. “We see enormous benefits of working with EURES. They thoroughly vet all candidates and we are able to be upfront and frank with them. EURES has always helped us to find someone who would be suitable for the job.”
Mutual cooperation between EURES and gem is important: not only does gem visit the EURES offices to meet potential candidates, but EURES Advisers are also encouraged to visit gem’s offices, so that advisers can see for themselves the success that their candidates now enjoy. “We have received visits from EURES Sweden, EURES Holland and of course, our local EURES Advisers visits us on a regular basis,” said Marcella McKeever, Recruitment Manager at gem.
In addition, gem is a regular participant in European Job Days “We attend European Job Days as this gives us an opportunity to visit the new countries, learn more about their culture, and provide jobseekers looking for international experience with the chance to introduce themselves. In the past we have attended events across Europe, particularly in Holland, Belgium and France and we have three events planned in the coming year with EURES, in France, Germany and Sweden.”
gem is always on the lookout for new people to join its team. The company conducts business in 29 languages, and places a high value on customer service. “We are looking for people who are fluent in English, as well as their native language. We also need people with the right attitude towards work”, said Ms McKeever. “EURES helps us find candidates who understand the importance of good customer service, have respect for other people, and share our values of working hard and having fun.”
