Father and sons find success in Norway

In 2006 Sigitas Damulis from Lithuania found a job in Norway through EURES. He was only planning to stay for a few months but now, seven years on, he is still there and now even his two sons have joined him.

Sigitas originally applied for a job as a carpenter in 2006 through a EURES Adviser in Lithuania. After his CV was selected, he successfully completed an interview with a representative from Adecco, the international human resource company managing the vacancy, and joined eight other compatriots moving to Oslo. Seven years later he and three of the others are still in Norway. Sigitas was even later joined by his two sons Mindaugas and Aurimas.

“I moved here in 2010 to work as a scaffolder and Aurimas, my brother, joined us a year and a half later, he is a carpenter like dad. We are all living in Oslo and a few of those who moved over originally are still here. I am enjoying it here and am planning to stay for now, though who knows what will happen in the future,” explains Mindaugas.

“My advice for anyone thinking of moving abroad is to be clear about why you are going and to get as much information as possible before you go. They [EURES and Adecco] have a lot of experience employing people from abroad so that made it much easier for all of us. They also helped a lot in finding more work. Obviously, you have to be prepared to work hard and get good recommendations but if you do, there are good opportunities out there.”

Sigitas and Aurimas are both still working with Adecco. Mindaugas is now working for Ramirent AS and is adding Norwegian to his already extensive list of languages: Lithuanian, English, Russian and Polish, so far.

Loreta Zdaniauskiene, EURES Adviser in Lithuania, followed up on the family’s progress. “It’s great to have feedback from them and others that have moved abroad. It helps us solve different questions and helps improve our EURES work, allowing us to provide an even more effective service in the future,” says Loreta.
