After months in development, the official EURES app for Android went live in March – bringing the job search tool to the fingertips of millions of smartphone users.
There had been a pressing need to grow EURES’ mobile presence, with many experts expecting mobile web use to eclipse desktop surfing at some point this year. Step one had been completed with the launch of the iPhone app late last year, and with Android dominating the market share for mobile operating systems in Europe, a EURES presence on the platform was inevitable. With these two mobile versions now available, the app covers some 85 % of Europe’s smartphone users.
Much the same as the iPhone edition, the Android app aims to provide some of the most important features of the EURES Portal to smartphone users. With a few finger swipes, they can seek out jobs Europe-wide, track down their nearest EURES Adviser for more personalised assistance or look up future EURES events. Also, it is free of charge, available in 25 languages, and covers the 27 EU Member States plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
Once they’ve launched the app on their phone, users can search for jobs posted by public employment services anywhere in Europe using filters such as job category and country. Job listings can be saved as favorites, like with a browser bookmark, for access later or for sharing with other people.
An optional feature allows users to let their phone detect its location so that the app can find their nearest EURES Advisers and contact details. They can also search for Advisers by country or language, or look up upcoming EURES recruitment events – including in the user’s own country.
For future versions of the software, it is hoped to integrate the app with the My EURES account system used by more hundreds of thousands jobseekers and thousands of employers. The service allows jobseekers to choose to receive e-mail alerts when suitable jobs come up, while employers can narrow down job searches by filtering candidates’ CVs. This system currently obliges users to register with desktop software, but should soon be imported to the new app, enabling mobile logins and logouts.
