“Your first EURES job” enhances job matching/placement across Europe

Your first EURES job (YfEj) is celebrating its first year of implementation. Launched in 2012, YfEj is based on the concept of a customised job mobility scheme, combined with financial support to help young people find work in other Member States. Among other support, the scheme finances language courses and travel expenses for young job applicants (for job interviews and job relocation) and a contribution to an integration programme in the case of recruitment by a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME). The target is to help fill some 5 000 job vacancies by 2014.
When looking for a job in another EU Member State or for highly qualified employees, both young jobseekers and European companies are turning to YfEj. Two Spanish jobseekers who managed to successfully find jobs in Germany and three employers who succeeded in recruiting through the scheme tell us about their experiences.
The young, mobile workers
“Personally, I think it’s great to be able to move for a new job all over the European Union and that EURES makes it easier than ever,” says Jesus Estrada, a Spanish national who is now living and working in Germany.
Jesus secured a job as a Software Developer for HOB, a company that delivers software packages to customers across many sectors. Previously working in a similar environment in his native Spain, he applied directly to HOB after taking advice from his local EURES Adviser. With EURES and YfEj, he always felt there was someone helping him “on the other side”, and coupled with the financial support, feels it is a great mechanism to help job mobility throughout Europe.

A good experience
Jesus Fraile is another Spanish jobseeker working with HOB in Germany. He too has found the scheme to be helpful and useful. “The main help that I’ve received is the financial support, but the EURES member helped me and advised me about all my doubts and all my questions that I’ve asked,” he says.
After studying a degree in Electronics, he was previously working as a Junior Engineer in Spain before his relocation to Germany. “I received more help than I expected. My experience with this scheme was very good. I recommend trying it, because it could be really helpful in order to start a new life abroad,” says Jesus Fraile.
The employers
“We were trying to find two IT-specialists for more than one year without any success. So I decided to contact Arbeitsamt Ludwigsburg [the public employment service] to help us find suitable employees. I got involved with YfEj scheme following this contact,” explains the managing director of the software company LIB-IT DMS GmbH, Dagmar Causley.
The cooperation has proved successful as the company managed to recruit one jobseeker from Spain and another from Bulgaria. “Using YfEj we had a higher number of applications, greater choice and were able to find highly motivated people,” she enthuses.
Learning a new language is crucial
The biggest challenge seems to be the language barrier. “We are very happy with both recruited employees. They do not speak German, so we hired a language teacher who helps them for half an hour every day,” explains Dagmar. “In the future, we plan to fill more vacancies through YfEj. I would recommend always sending a comprehensive CV and to be honest about language skills during the application process,” she adds.
Crispin Mühlich, CEO of Mühlich KG, a German company that produces wood-based materials, shares the same opinion. “A sound knowledge of German language is essential,” he says. Through the YfEj scheme, he managed to successfully recruit two new employees.
“A head-hunter was in contact with a Spanish jobseeker who later contacted me, mentioning EURES and YfEj,” he says. With the help of the public employment service ZAV, in Bonn, he rapidly got engaged with the scheme. Crispin Mühlich found it “very well organised” and was particularly impressed by “an advisory service of high level.” “Using YfEj we managed to find high qualified staff members with great motivation,” he adds.
Motivation wanted
An investment company based and established in London, United Kingdom, also praises the value of the job seekers’ motivation. Hereford Capital has recruited three new employees through the YfEj scheme since last summer.
“They need to have the drive to come here. Their determination needs to be strong. We appreciate that dedication, that motivation,” says Hereford Capital’s Managing Director, Bjorn Gravsholt.
Hereford Capital was introduced to the YfEj scheme through contacts in Denmark. “It has been a positive experience so far and we try to focus on the learning aspect of the scheme, providing specific training plans. We are presently looking to recruit another person and we would be keen to advertise the vacancy through EURES and YfEj,” concludes Hereford Capital’s Investment Portfolio Manager, Frederik Hein Riise.
