Short overview of the labour market

The population of Slovakia on 31 December 2019 was 5 457 873, an overall rise over the year of 1 511.

The Slovak Republic’s net migration figure was +1 211 (1 927 people immigrated there and 716 emigrated). The registered unemployment rate at 31 March 2020 was 5.19%, with the Prešov Region reporting the highest number of unemployed persons (41 408) and the Bratislava Region the lowest (11 356). The largest proportion of unemployed persons was registered in the 55-59 years age group.

The development of employment was influenced by a growing number of workers in multiple sectors. The workforce expanded in both industrial production and agriculture. In the service sectors, employment increased primarily in information and communication and in professional, scientific and technical activities. There was a fall in employment in the construction industry.

The highest rise in employment in Q4 2019 was recorded in the Banská Bystrica and Trnava Regions.

Short-term migration abroad for work purposes continued to decline in Q4 2019. Migrant workers tended to be concentrated in industry, construction, and health and social work. Elsewhere in Europe, most Slovak citizens were to be found working in Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany. From a regional standpoint, most of those on the move came from the Prešov and Nitra Regions. The number of vacancies decreased in Q4 2019. In absolute terms, vacancies went down in the wholesale and retail trade, construction and industrial production, but rose in health and social work in particular.
