At present, the county area covers Panevėžys town and the municipalities of Biržai, Kupiškis, Panevėžys, Pasvalys and Rokiškis. In terms of its surface area, Panevėžys County is the fourth largest county in Lithuania. Panevėžys is the fifth largest town in the Republic of Lithuania. It is intersected by major roads as well as the Via Baltica highway, whilst the town has rail connections and the historic narrow-gauge railway line used by tourists.

Panevėžys County is dominated by small and medium-sized businesses, companies with 1 to 9 employees accounting for the bulk of operations. The main industries are timber production and the manufacture of furniture, meat, bread and bakery products. Though conditions are favourable for agriculture, major investments and reliable partners are needed.
