Short overview of the labour market


Kaunas County is located in central Lithuania. This beautiful and picturesque county consists of the districts of Kaunas, Kėdainiai, Kaišiadorys, Jonava, Prienai, Raseiniai as well as Birštonas town and Kaunas city. The surface area of Kaunas County is 8 060 km2. According to Statistics Lithuania, the population at the beginning of 2019 was 515 559, or one fifth of the country’s entire population. The county’s administrative centre is Kaunas, Lithuania’s second city in terms of size and importance. It has a population of 286 754. Kaunas County has over 21 000 active economic operators. These were mainly small and medium-sized enterprises. Most economic operators registered are active in the services sector (80.3%), industry (10.2%), construction (7.5%) and agriculture (2%). Industry in Kaunas City is dominated by the manufacture of food products and beverages, textile products and clothing, furniture and wood products, and metals and metal products. The manufacturing industry in Kaunas includes: manufacture of metal products, medicaments, fibre yarns, textile and bakery products, fruit squashes and alcoholic beverages, which account for a significant portion of the domestic market. The leading industry in the Kaunas City Municipality is manufacturing. Most of the vacancies registered by employers were in businesses providing services. By business activity, manufacturing, wholesale and retail enterprises accounted for most vacancies. Due to its convenient geographical location and favourable infrastructure conditions in Kaunas Free Economic Zone, the last years have seen significant growth in the number of foreign capital enterprises boosting the supply of innovative quality jobs.
