Integration of Migrants into the Labour Market – The Role of Employers in North Rhine-Westphalia

Forums:

In November 2017, the Network had the opportunity to visit Essen in North Rhine-Westphalia to explore the role that employers can play in supporting the labour market integration of asylum seekers and refugees. Network members were fortunate enough to visit four projects in total:

  1. Integration of Refugees into the Healthcare System, run by University Teaching Hospital Essen;
  2. NRW. Das machen WIR!, run by the NRW Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Health and the Gesellschaft für innovative Beschäftigungsförderung;
  3. PerMenti, lead by The Grone Educational Centre NRW GmbH; and
  4. Start into a Job, led by Evonik.

All projects were of great interest to the Network. Participants were particularly struck by the personal commitment of project staff in helping refugees to achieve their professional aspirations, but also the level and extent of meaningful partnership working across all projects to help refugees access, and remain on, vocational training courses.

Our main conclusions from this study visit are summarised on this executive summary of study visit report.
