Annual report highlights continuing battle against discrimination for Roma community

Since 2005, Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) has produced ‘Discrimination and the Roma Community’, an annual report that spotlights the continuing fight against discrimination and anti-Gypsyism in Spain.

This year, the report builds on the 20th anniversary of FSG's training and employment Acceder programme, and also highlights the launch of  #PanParaMañana #Breadfortomorrow, an awareness-raising campaign demanding equal labour opportunities for young Roma.

Discrimination continues to be a barrier to many Roma people securing work, and the report therefore focuses on substantial numbers of documented cases where companies, employers or colleagues have discriminated against Roma individuals and groups.  However, there are also successes: the report includes contributions on how to effectively combat discrimination in this area, and includes excerpts from strategic litigation currently undertaken by the FSG together – as well as a summary of best practices on how to build and maintain non-discrimination policies.

Effective research such as ‘Discrimination and the Roma Community’ demonstrates Member States’ efforts to build comprehensive anti-discrimination legal and support systems, particularly vital for anti-Roma/anti-Gypsy issues.  Effective anti-discrimination regimes allow victims to access effective resources when their rights are violated – all-the-more critical in light of the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on growing instances of discrimination across the Union.
