For some people, integrating or re-integrating into society is a challenge, but a simple idea from the National Committee for Social Defence (CNDS) in Luxembourg helped people into work by providing some interesting retail experience. The Kleederstuff II project was aimed at ex-offenders, refugees, beneficiaries of the minimum guaranteed income scheme, people with mental health issues and others in need of support. The project was run like a retail shop and involved collecting, sorting, repairing and personalising second-hand clothes to be re-sold at a modest price.

For young people, finding a job can be particularly difficult. Without experience or key skills, it can be hard to know which steps to take. You Can Do It!, a project developed by Asociace Manažerů Absolventů (AMA) and funded by the European Social Fund, was aimed at disadvantaged young Czech people aged 18 to 30 who were registered at the jobcentre but hadn’t yet decided on a career path. Each young person was offered one-to-one coaching to determine his or her interests and skill levels, followed by a series of training sessions.

Ohjaamo centres are "one-stop guidance shops” for people under the age of 30. The Ohjaamo centre in Helsinki is co-founded by five City of Helsinki government departments and the Uusimaa regional Public Employment Services. Developed based on experiences from a previous ESF-funded project, Ohjaamo focuses on employment and career guidance, but also offers advice about everything from finances to health and relationships.

It offers young people who are not in education, employment or training an intensive programme of support to get onto the labour ladder. The project aims to tackle unemployment levels among young people in Poland, which are very high, as in the rest of Europe. The barriers young people face include lack of experience, difficulties transitioning from school, and inadequate "soft" skills – things like teamwork, time management, positive thinking and a flexible attitude.

Under en tioveckorskurs lär sig deltagarna om den svenska arbetsmarknaden, studiemöjligheter, ekonomiskt stöd för studier, rättigheter i samhället, och balansen mellan arbete/hushållssysslor. De studerar också svenska parallellt, eftersom språket är ett av de största hindren för att arbeta.

Så regionen har fått arbeta med en omstrukturering av arbetsmarknaden, eftersom efterfrågan på arbetskraft i servicesektorn och hälso- och sjukvården växer, säger projektledaren Elisabeth Stake.

Tio delprojekt i regionen erbjuder deltagarna coachning och studie- och yrkesvägledning, samt möjlighet att delta i motiverande aktiviteter och praktik.
