A project developed by the Slovenian Book Agency aims to help disadvantaged people to integrate into society – and eventually into employment – by offering a range of workshops with a creative, cultural emphasis. Include and Activate! is aimed at people with mental health disorders and disabilities, prison inmates who are scheduled for release, and people who are undergoing drug rehabilitation.
Specialist project mentors help participants to develop their own creative expression and digital literacy, as well as giving them the opportunity to meet real-life writers, poets and illustrators, and to write and perform their own works.
Sessions are designed to expose participants to a wide range of literature and illustration, and can be adapted to offer extra skills, like public speaking, depending on each group’s needs.
Include and Activate! has proven to be a big hit with the organisations, societies and prisons taking part, with all the institutions giving very positive feedback.
The number of participants has risen every year so far, with around 200 people expected to have taken part by the end of the project. With a completion rate of over 80%, it’s clear that the Include and Activate! project is a hit with the participants too – all of whom have gone from reader to writer, and all of whom have improved their social skills and potential employability through art and culture.
