ESCO is the multilingual classification of European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations. ESCO is an important deliverable to support the Europe 2020 strategy and the New Skills Agenda for Europe.
The Commission services launched the project in 2010 with an open stakeholder consultation. DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion manages the development and continuous updating of the ESCO classification. In this work, it is supported by stakeholders and by the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training Cedefop.
The ESCO classification identifies and categorises skills, competences, qualifications and occupations relevant for the EU labour market and education and training. It systematically shows the relationships between the different concepts. ESCO has been developed in an open IT format, is available for use free of charge by everyone and can be accessed via the ESCO service platform.
A demo version of ESCO (ESCO v0) was published on 23 October 2013. This release marks the beginning of the pilot and testing phase. The first full version of ESCO (ESCO v1) has been released on 28 July 2017. The release has been followed by the Conference "ESCO: Connecting people and jobs" whereby ESCO has been showcased in concrete applications to demonstrate its value in different use cases.
