Changing the assessment narrative through TESTA

This interactive seminar will discuss taking a programmatic approach to assessment as a way of challenging the dominance of assessment of learning in favour of more assessment for learning.

During the seminar participants will perform a mock audit of a programme, role play a focus group about assessment and feedback, and complete a questionnaire about assessment experience from the perspective of an imagined student. This seminar will give participants a picture of a real programme. Finally the seminar will look at change theories in education giving the participants the opportunity to identify enabling factors and barriers to change.

Drawing on Fullan and Scott (2009), Clancy (2018), Carless et al. (2017), Gibbs (2013), and TESTA change principles, the workshop will look systematic approaches to change, and different ways of scaling up. Participants will be introduced to a recently designed curriculum framework using Fink’s 'learning-oriented approach' (Fink 2003) and the concept of ‘personal knowing’ (Polanyi 1958; 1966; Palmer 1983). The framework is designed to assist programme teams during programme design and review to take a broader view of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
