At the Criminal-correctional institution (KPZ) in Sombor since January this year, the "Step by Step" club was designed to provide support to prisoners through work and education in order to increase the percentage of the success of their reintegration into society, but also to reduce the risk of a criminological relapse. The thing that makes this program special is that it includes members of their families, and everyone who wants to contribute to the reintegration and adaptation of prisoners to the conditions of life in freedom.

10 presentations were delivered about different ways, measures or programmes to help low qualified persons integrate into the labour market. Also, a lot of attention was paid to sharing good practice examples about various programmes devoted to the social and work integration of ex-offenders.

The Ministry of Justice has announced the launch of a consultation this month on the new Earned Incentives and Privileges policy. This framework would allow prison governors to select effective incentives for participation in meaningful activities such as education and employment programmes. Governors could tailor incentives to the specific challenges of each prison, as many consider the current system to not be as effective as it could be due to lack of flexibility.

The closing date for receipt of applications under the Irish Probation Service's 'KickStart’ Seed Fund programme has been extended to Friday, the 31st August at 5 p.m. 

 

The programme will support the development of social enterprises and increase employment for people with criminal convictions.

Adult Learning Agenda in Turkey has been working on upskilling pathways programmes to increase the employment opportunities for former prisoners. Therefore, seven stakeholder meetings have been organized and cooperation protocol has been signed by NGO’s, local governments and relevant ministries. At one of these meetings the Director of Vocational Training Department of Municipality of Eskişehir shared their work about the subject.
Training on bread baking at roundhouse are organized by the Public Education Center in Karabük province in the context of the project ‘Making bread with prisoners’. The target group of the project are the prisoners of Karabük roundhouse. The aim of the project is to provide prisoners with income in prison and adapt quickly when they come out of convictions and so, not to commit a crime again. Within the scope of the project, 30 prisoners have registered the training on bread baking for 5 days a week, by making 2000 bread a day. They both meet the bread need of the prison and gain income by selling the remaining bread to the markets outside.

ILOT is an association which works for the rehabilitation and reintegration of those rejected by society, and in distress. Among those whom it supports are people with criminal records (released from prison or with suspended sentences). EPALE France is working with ILOT to learn about the steps put in place for their reintegration, particularly the qualification-integration workshops.

The Department for Secondary Vocational Education, Adult Education and Lifelong Learning of the Agency for Pre- Primary, Primary and Secondary Education, which implements the EPALE project, organized the Final EPALE Conference in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the past two-year period. The Agency for Pre- Primary, Primary and Secondary Education has implemented EPALE project since 2015 with the aim of improving the adult education system in Bosnia and Herzegovina and approaching European educational standards.

EPALE NSS Serbia gives an overview of the main topic of the closing EPALE conference in Bosnia and Herzegovina held 13-14. November 2018. Apart from the presentation of the results and the impact of the EPALE platform in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the countries in the region (Montenegro, Serbia and Croatia), the focus of the conference was on prison education and showcasing best practice examples from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the neighbouring countries.

I have always thought that my only experience with staying in prison would be this related to the "Monopoly” board game. However, my research and professional interests focused on ageing and old age and these can also be observed in prisons.

De dag van de lesgevers aan gedetineerden is een initiatief van de Projectgroep ‘pedagogische ondersteuning voor lesgevers aan gedetineerden’ binnen het samenwerkingsverband tussen Vocvo en alle pedagogische begeleidingsdiensten.

The Prisons Education & Library Services for adult prisons in England Policy Framework by the Ministry of Justice provides the minimum mandatory requirements needed to deliver education and library services in adult prisons in England. Governors, heads of groups, the women’s estate, public sector prisons and over 18s young offender institutions are all expected to adhere to the framework. 

The Learning and Work Institute have created a helpful resource that benefits prisoners and learning providers by encouraging positive family relationships between the prsioners and their relatives. This helps prisoners to be released into society as better citizens.

The resource will be most beneficial to prison learning providers, including: prison governors; heads of learning and skills; third sector and family learning managers; and programme commissioners. 

Teaching in prison entails teaching in a particular context that you have to know in order to establish its place. The issue of education in prison cannot be broached therefore without paying attention to the particular context in which it is provided. This is what we shall do in an initial point. We will then report and comment on the experiments conducted under  “REINSERT,” a social advancement education project co-funded by the European Social Fund.

EPALE National Support Service issues an electronic magazine each month tied to the thematic focus on EPALE. The magazine contains a selection of most read blogs on the platform translated into Serbian and other articles relevant to adult education in Serbia and Europe.

In accordance with the EPALE monthly focus the magazine in July 2018 dealt with Prison education.

The Flemish (Belgian) project 'Learning Inside Out project (LIO)' is a collaboration between Leerwinkel West-Vlaanderen, the Justice Department and Vocvo (Flemish support center for adult education).  LIO offers guidance and orientation on adult education for inmates in order to increase their chances on reintegration. The service is accessible for the inmates in the prisons of Ypres, Ruiselede and Bruges (West Flanders).The project is supported by the European Social Fund.

Dr. Kevin Warner, former National Co-ordinator of Prison Education in the Irish Prison Service, researches and writes about the practice and philosophy of adult education, specifically the approach to it by prisoners and prison education policies.
