Health literacy

The government has launched a new scheme to help regenerate village halls across the country. Funds can be used to refurbish existing halls, but will not be used to establish new builds. Village halls serve as essential meeting places for local citizens to enjoy sports and leisure activities, as well as to discuss and receive healthcare and education.

NHS England has launched its Healthy New Towns Programme guidance – a leaflet that discusses the ten principles to building healthy new places, their benefits and provides a range of case studies as evidence. The housing development sites that are working with the Programme and the NHS aim to share best practice, their own case studies and supply guidance so that the country can take a unified and high quality approach to new developments on land previously used by the government.

Community gardening projects can have a profound positive impact on health, wellbeing and adult learning. Volunteers and workers have the opportunity to build vital skills, including those focused on food safety, the environment and science, as well as communication and teamwork skills that can then be applied to further education and meaningful careers. Everyone involved can benefit from boosting their mental and physical health by getting out in nature and having a positive impact on their local community.

The focus of the thesis is the effect of lifelong learning on mental well-being of people experiencing mental health problems. It is based on the case study of service users of the Association for support of people with neurosis in Belgrade, Serbia. The lifelong learning concept is not currently considered for addressing the needs of mental health service users in Serbia and there is a lack of research on this topic. Since available treatment methods in Serbia can be expensive and difficult to access, participation in adult learning can be a more cost-effective, community-based and non-stigmatising alternative for people experiencing less severe mental health problems, such as neurosis. The theoretical framework of the study was constituted of six variables that were assessed to potentially best mediate the impact of lifelong learning on mental well-being: self-efficacy, self-esteem, empowerment, competences, sense of purpose and hope, and social integration. A qualitative research approach and phenomenology as a research design were used, including semi-structured interviews with seven service users of the Association for support of people with neurosis. The findings showed a positive impact of lifelong learning on mental well-being of the participants in terms of increasing their self-efficacy, self-esteem, empowerment, competences, sense of purpose and hope, as well as social integration. Additionally, new concepts emerged, that mediated the effect of lifelong learning on mental well-being of participants: understanding and support from other classmates, rewarding feeling of helping others, self-understanding and acceptance.
