Basic Skills within VET: online discussion

The European Basic Skills Network (EBSN) will hold a two-day online discussion focusing on basic skills within VET. This online discussion can be seen as preparation for the European Vocational Skills Week. The EBSN will be represented at the main event in Brussels and will convey there the results of this online discussion.

Learners on VET courses need to develop the specific language, literacy and maths skills required for the workplace. For adults this can be a barrier to success; it’s much easier to motivate someone to acquire a set of vocational skills, than to motivate them to improve the basic skills that underpin the acquisition of these skills. They are often reluctant to return to studying basic skills, which they may well associate with negative memories from school.

We would like to hear about your opinion on how best to address poor basic skills within VET. One way of providing VET learners with effective basic skills learning opportunities is to embed or integrate the basic skills teaching and learning into their vocational study. What other ways are there to address this issue and ensure that all adults have the support they need to succeed on their VET course.

Join us to discuss:

  • Your experience of managing, teaching or designing VET with a focus on basic skills.
  • How basic skills are addressed within VET in different countries.
  • Different models for the integration or embedding of basic skills.

To stimulate the discussion we have asked two experts to write blogs about their experiences regarding Basic Skills within VET:

Gonçalo Xufre Silva, the president of the ANQEP writes about the Portuguese approach regarding Basic Skills for adults in need of upskilling

Rosemarie Klein, from the Bureau for planning of vocational training (bbb), introduces a European project on professional development for staff working on basic skills and vocational training at the workplace

The discussion is open to everyone and will take place on 16 November (starting from 10.00 CET) and 17 November 2017. It will be moderated by EBSN Secretary General, Graciela Sbertoli and the EBSN EPALE team.

We would also be very interested to read (very) short case studies of VET initiatives which deal effectively with basic skills. Include links to documents and web resources that provide more information. It does not matter if these are not in English.
