Basic Skills for Integration: online discussion

The theme of this year’s EBSN Annual Conference (May 31st to June 2nd, Luxemburg), organized in cooperation with the Department of Adult Education of the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth in Luxembourg as part of the national program for the implementation of the European Agenda for Adult Learning in Luxembourg, is Basic Skills for Integration.

Integration of migrants has become a key issue in Europe due to the refugee crisis. The development of migrants’ basic skills has a crucial role to play in the successful integration of migrants. The conference, and this pre-conference discussion, will provide an opportunity for exchange of experience and collaborative knowledge production. We hope to learn about basic skills development policy and practice for migrant education in different host countries.

To stimulate discussion we have prepared three blogs addressing important issues in the integration of adult migrants:

  1. EPALE Thematic Coordinator David Mallows asks us to look beyond the paradigm of formal language-learning to enable us to design interventions to support language learning for adult migrants.
  2. Celia Sokolowsky, project leader for the German online learning platform “Ich will Deutsch lernen" tells us why digital skills matter in migrant education and asks what should be done to improve the situation.
  3. Karsten Schneider, Verband der Volkshochschulen des Saarlandes, takes a step back to describe how the German migrant education system has responded to the increase in demand over the last few years and suggests that there may more work to do.

We hope you will join us here from 14.00 CET on Thursday 18th May until 17.00 CET on Friday 19th May to discuss the themes explored in the three blogs and to share your experience of working with adult migrants.
