How to apply for the European Natura 2000 Award 2020

This page provides all information on how and when to submit your application.

The deadline for applications is 30 September 2019. 


When you click on the Apply here button, you will first be asked to set up an account. To do this, please enter the requested information: username, e-mail address, name, organisation name and type, and the Member State(s) from which the application will be submitted.

You should also select the language in which you wish to complete the form. Applications can be submitted in any of the official EU languages, with the exception of Gaelic and Maltese. However, some fields in the application form (indicated in application form) must be completed in English only. Once selected, you cannot change the language so please choose carefully.

Once you have pressed "Register", you will be sent a confirmation e-mail. Click on the link provided in the e-mail to add a password. After doing so, your account will be created and you can log-in and log-out of your application as desired.

Application form

The Application form contains the following sections:

Step 1 – Administrative information
Step 2 – Summary information
Step 3 – Details on Natura 2000 site(s) concerned
Step 4 – The category you are applying to
Step 5 – Details of the targeted species and habitat types
Step 6 – The application’s merits in relation to the evaluation criteria

When working on the form, you can:

  • Save your application as often as you wish, using the “Save as draft” button;
  • Move forward and back within the pages you have completed using the "Next" and "Back" buttons (do not use the back button on the internet browser);
  • Access your application as many times as you want as long as you do not submit it (making sure to "Save as draft" before leaving the page);
  • Preview your application by clicking on the “Preview” button; and
  • Upload required files (word, pdf) as well as pictures and videos using the links provided.

Once your application is finalised, you should save it, and then send it by clicking on “Submit”. Once submitted, you will no longer have access to your application. It will be stored in a database which will be only accessed by the European Natura 2000 Award Secretariat and the European Commission.

You will receive an e-mail acknowledging receipt of your application. This acknowledgement will include a unique reference number which should be used in all communications concerning the application. You will also receive a pdf copy of your completed application for your records.

Benchmarking reports for previous years’ award. These reports are drawn-up by the Award Secretariat and present an analysis of the most successful applications from each year highlighting 11 recurrent ‘elements of success’.

Applicants from previous years will be given access to their application from last year so they can modify and re-submit it.
