Ardeola ralloides

Map of the common names

Little heron (L 40 cm). In flight predominantly white, a surprising transformatiom since a golden-ochre on ground. Commom but seldom abundant in well-vegetated wetlands, also found on deltas, estuaries and rivers. Nests in trees, often with other herons. Frogs are a preferred prey, with freshwater fish and insects also taken. Migrant.

Reasons for the need for protection/inclusion in annex I

The EU's population is estimated about 1,800-2,000 breeding pairs. The greatest threats are the loss and deterioration of breeding and feeding habitats as well as disturbance at colonies.
