Instore-Farming project; Growing herbs and vegetables on-site in the METRO Cash & Carry Store Berlin-Friedrichshain
Together with the start up INFARM, METRO GROUP has developed an vertical farm, growing delicious produce, such as vegetables and herbs, in full transparency and on-demand, 365 days a year. In a project which is unique across Europe, Infarm and Employees at METRO wholesale store in Berlin-Friedrichshain are growing various types of herbs and vegetables directly on-site. Providing herbs at the point of sale (POS) has several advantage which contribute to a better overall sustainability performance.METRO’s carbon footprint benefits because of the absence of a transportation route. Post harvest losses (as products are harvested on demand) are reduced and food waste on store and customer level can hence be decreased. Furthermore, also packaging waste is reduced. The herb garden in the METRO Cash & Carry store in Berlin Friedrichshain is a pilot project and has been launched in February 2016.

The commitment is deliberately not assigned with a quantitative target. The project is a pilot. The pilot's assessment goes beyond quantitative targets. Coming closer to a circular economy requires thinking out of the box and innovative approaches. The infarm project rethinks tradtional wholesale patterns and tests new paths to produce and sell our products to our customers.
