2016: • During 2016 ICA Sweden launched the “Fresh until at least” date stamp for four of ICA’s private label yoghurt variants as a way of drawing consumers’ attention to the actual significance of food date stamping, and thereby reducing food waste. Far too much of the food thrown out by households is still good even though the “Best before” date has passed. However, the date stamp was questioned by the Swedish National Food Agency, as a result of which ICA Sweden changed back to the “Best before” date stamp.
• Cooperation with even more Food Banks to reduce food waste and keep valuable food in the value chain
• Sustainable packaging: Another way to reduce food waste is to ensure that the packaging design is functional. For example, ICA Sweden has introduced yoghurt packaging that makes it easier to scrape out all the contents without anything being wasted. The packaging is also easier to squash, so takes up less space in the recycling bin.
• Circular - ICA Rescued fruit: Together with the company Rescued Fruits, ICA Sweden rescued fruits that would otherwise have been discarded, nearly 22 tonnes of fruit during 2016. Surplus fruit from ICA’s warehouses and stores are turned into fruit drinks under ICA’s private label.
• Anatomy responsibility - Nose to tail: Promotion for using all parts of animals.
• Inform and inspire our customers how to avoid food waste, through our website www.ica.se and on our milk packages
